Aquarium Bio Media Overview

Several different types of biological media are available to the aquarist. It can be a confusing task to pick your filtration system and all the media to go along with it. In this video we attempt to highlight all the most common biological medias and talk about their different pros and cons. It’s important to understand that different bio medias have different surface areas and will provide unique microbial environments based upon what they are constructed of.

Filter sponge, bio balls, ceramics rings, biohome, kaldnes K1 etc, will all provide different habitats and have their own capacity to grow microbes. One should remember that no matter what media you use, you will still get biological filtration. One media may work better at providing denitrification activity while another may provide better nitrification. The media you choose will depend on what your overall goal is.
