DIY Power Gravel Vacuum
A gravel vacuum is a vital component of every non-planted tank keeper’s collection of gear. Gravel vacuum maintenance is important because as waste builds up inside of the substrate, it will continuously release toxic ammonia and other nutrients that can cause algae in non-planted aquariums. While you can use traditional methods like a plain siphon gravel vacuum, this powerhead driven gravel vacuum allows you to re-circulate water back in to your aquarium and eliminated the need to collect it in a bucket below your tank. This takes the timing out of cleaning your gravel as you won’t have to always be worried about your water change bucket overflowing on you.
Cleaning your gravel this way does not mean water changes are no longer necessary, one should always preform regular water changes to ensure the health of the system. This is just a simple way of giving your gravel a really good cleaning without having to drain the majority of your aquariums volume like with a usual cleaning.
