DIY Hang-On-Back (HOB) Filter

Hang-On-Back aquarium filters (HOB filters) are by far the most common type of aquarium filtration on the market. Coveted for their ease of use and low profile design, they are also a great method of mechanical and biological filtration. Here, we show you how to construct a totally custom DIY hang on back filter using a powerhead and a tupperware container. There are a few other attaching pieces used to complete this project and information regarding them can be found in other videos.

The HOB filter we make here is just a rough outline of what you have the ability to create. We personally like to fill the entire back portion of the filter with biological media to maximize the potential for nitrifying bacteria. Mechanical filtration is achieved via the input that is wrapped with filter padding. There are several ways to create a DIY hang on back filter so don’t be afraid to get creative!
